Just the Perfect Tense

Aim:
IWBAT explain and properly use the present perfect, past perfect, and future perfect verb tenses.


Tasks:

3. Past Perfect:
  • The past perfect tense is formed with: subject + had + past participle
  • The past perfect tense is used:
    • completed action before something else in the past
      • example: I had never seen such a beautiful beach before I went to Kauai.
    • duration before something else in the past
      • example: They felt bad about selling the house because they had owned it for more than forty years.

  • The future perfect tense is formed with: subject + will + have + past participle
    • another way to write it is: subject + is/are + going to + past participle
  • The future perfect tense is used:
    • completed action before something in the future
      • example: By the time my mom gets home, I will have cleaned the entire house.

      • example: On Monday Maria is going to have had my book for a week.
